A young Truro trainee has secured an elite scholarship with one of the world’s best known choirs.
Thomas Crow, 18, is singing the praises of Chartered Accountants Robinson Reed Layton, who have encouraged him to fit his rehearsals and singing commitments with Truro Cathedral Choir alongside his studies. For the Winchester-born lad it has been a dream come true, combining his love for numeracy with his passion for choral singing.
The hard work has paid off, as Thomas has secured an elite scholarship with Kings College, Cambridge, reading Economics and Music. The choir is amongst the best in the world and their annual Christmas Carol concert is heard by an estimated 100 million people around the world, making them the most popular choir on the planet.
However, Thomas is in no doubt that without the help of his employers this would have remained an unfilled pipedream.
“To get a place at Oxbridge is every student’s dream, but to secure a scholarship at Kings, the most prestigious Choral college in the world, is just unbelievable. Without the support of RRL, who have been so accommodating, by allowing me to take time off for the daily practices and Cathedral Choir commitments, I simply couldn’t have achieved this,” he said.
His love for Cornwall remains undiminished: “When I leave in September it’s with mixed emotions. I love my job and being around my work colleagues, as well as the beautiful environment. The reality is that as a professional tenor I will need to be near to the capital. That’s not to say that one day I would not like to come back. Working at RRL was the perfect job and I couldn’t have asked any more of my employers, but I realise that I have a God-given ability to sing and via them I’ve been given a chance in a million.”
Thomas leaves RRL in August to exchange tenners for tenors in his new life at Kings College, Cambridge.
