The government has admitted that the Inland Revenue loses some of the nine million self-assessment tax returns sent to them each year. In ‘an operation of this size a very small proportion of returns may be misplaced’. The Inland Revenue does not keep ‘specific data’ about the number lost but does its ‘utmost to keep to a minimum any inconvenience to taxpayers’.
No wonder we are frustrated at times in our dealings with the Inland Revenue!
